Author of resolution on recognition of Armenian Genocide in Belgium pleased with voting results

The authors of the resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in Belgium’s House of Representatives applied to the parliament to study it with urgency and to discuss it at the plenary session on July 16.

Author of the draft resolution, MP Peter De Roover informed this in an exclusive interview with Armenpress. The Belgian MP particularly stated: “I am very pleased that after the statement made by Prime Minister Michel recognizing the massacres of 1915 as a genocide, we as a parliament could continue on this tone and hand in a majority resolution. This resolution also asks Turkey to recognize the Armenian genocide. Our intention is to bring the Armenian people and Turkey closer together in hopes of a bright mutual future. I am proud to have been a part of this process and even prouder that today in the foreign affairs commission the resolution got voted not only by the majority but also by the socialist opposition party Sp.a. We have asked that the resolution be treated with urgency so it would be handled in the plenary session next Thursday.”

Foreign Affairs Committee of Belgium’s House of Representatives voted for the draft resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide on July 7. The draft resolution recognizes and condemns the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and calls on Turkey and Armenia to seek for reconciliation. Expressing his stance on the Armenian Genocide, the Prime Minister of Belgium Charles Michel stated: “The Armenian Genocide did take place”. He added that it is beyond a shadow of doubt.

The Prime Minister of Belgium Charles Michel recognized the Armenian Genocide on behalf of his government on June 18. As Armenpress reports citing “De Morgen”, Charles Michel said that the tragic events, which took place in the period between 19151917 in the Ottoman Empire, should be considered genocide. The Prime Minister particularly stated, “The relationship between history and the future is occasionally complicated. My position is well known, I think that the tragic events should be labeled as genocide, and that is also the position of the Belgian government.” American politician and civil rights lawyer Patrick Deval said, “It was genocide and it is vital that we firmly mention this fact as a state.”
